Things to see and do in Ashburton District
Markets
There are several weekend markets in Ashburton and the surrounding area. The most popular are the Ashburton Farmers Market and the Market Central Ashburton. The Ashburton Farmers Market is a regular market offering fresh produce from the local district’s farmers. Market Central Ashburton is held every fortnight on a Saturday from 9am to 1pm. Stalls feature a great mix of stalls including collectables, plants, jewelry, bric-a-brac, clothing, children’s toys and more. The two markets are conveniently located adjacent to one another and are a great family activity for a weekend stay at Tinwald Motel.
Skiing and Snowboarding
The Ashburton District features a range of exciting areas for skiing and snowboarding and all within easy driving distance of the town centre. Mt Hutt Ski area is around 35 minutes from Methven. Take a skiing or snowboarding lesson, or hit the slopes in the snowboard terrain park. Mt Hutt is also known for having the longest season in New Zealand for commercial skiing and snowboarding. Methven Heliski also offers amazing drop-off points with the Central Southern Alps, amongst Arrowsmith and Ragged Ranges. Return to Tinwald Motel after a long day in the snow and warm up in your heated room.
Lake Hood
Just 4km from Tinwald Motel, Lake Hood is part of Ashburton Aquatic Park, which comprises 173ha of water and land and is used as a free community water park. The park includes 7km of lake front, an eight-lane international rowing course, separate international water-skiing course and amazing areas for kayaking, sailing, boating and swimming. If you love water sports, then Lake Hood is a dream come true! The Lakes facilities also include a restaurant, bar and function facilities.
Museums
Ashburton’s three well-known museums - Ashburton Museum, Ashburton Aviation Museum and Ashburton Vintage Car Museum are a great thing to see or do in the area. Ashburton Museum features exhibits of local, national and international historical importance. Ashburton Aviation Museum features displays of New Zealand’s most unique air craft, including a GR3 Harrier VTOL Jetfighter, a 1933 Porterfield, a B2 Canberra Bomber Cockpit and a 1942 German Veihe Gilder. The museum is open Saturday 9am-4pm, Sunday 1pm-3pm and Wednesday 10am-3pm. Ashburton Vintage Car Museum has a range of vintage and veteran cars on show and is open by request.
Golf
Within half an hour of Ashburton town centre there is a huge selection of golf courses to challenge your abilities. Try Ashburton Golf Course, a nationally ranked championship course, Tinwald Golf Club, with stunning views of the mountains or Methven Golf Club, a spectacular country course. Also visit Ashburton District’s smaller courses such as Rakaia Golf Club. |
